THE VALUE INN is ten dollars cheaper than the Economy Suites. So of course Ted takes a left and pulls in there. The Economy Suites is hardly a palace, but at least the sign says HBO, air conditioning, and California King beds.

She waits in the car while he goes in to book the room.

One thing Capri hates about Ted is how cheap he is. It’s a major turn-off in a man. Like the piece of shit Toyota Yaris he stole. Because it’s good on gas, he says. Good on gas shouldn’t factor into a lovers-on-the-run scenario. She should be flashing truckers from a speeding convertible. Checking into penthouse suites and ordering room service that comes on a cart. That’s the life she wants. One she’ll never have with Ted.

If she wants that life, she needs to make it on her own. She’s not going to make the same mistake her mother made, thinking every new boyfriend was the answer to all their problems. Most of the time they only ended up making things worse.

She doesn’t know how she got in so deep with him anyway. He was supposed to be a quick fix in a bad situation. A place to land while she planned her next move. Then it turned out the next move was robbing Big Smoke. Ted was in the right place at the right time. But she’s not sure how much longer she can ride it out with him.

On cue, Ted grovels and begs for sex as soon as they set their bags down. She’s not in the mood, but she eventually caves. Then Ted can’t even get it up. He stands next to one of the shitty full-size beds, tugging at his skinny dick.

“Jesus Christ, Ted.” Capri stands on the bed. “What’s your problem?”

“I don’t know, boo. C’mere, let me try it again. Say something dirty.”

He paws at her leg and she kicks him away.

“I don’t need that thing pressing against me. Put it away.”

“I’m freaked out, okay?” Ted steps into his boxers and shimmies them up. “You’re not worried at all?”

“About what?”

“About everything. I don’t know where we’re going. How we’re going to sell this shit. Who is out there looking for us. The one time we did sell something, you beat the guy up and took it right back. You could’ve killed him and you don’t even give a fuck.”

“Fuck him.”

“Fuck him. Right. Fuck Eddie too? At the dispensary? You don’t think he’s going to want his weed back? You don’t think Carvell may be coming after us. You told me—”

“Carvell doesn’t realize he’s a security guy at a weed store. Not a fucking mercenary.”

“What about my bail bonds guy? He said if I took off he’d come looking for me.”

“Who?”

“Harry. The guy who bailed me out. How long before he realizes I’m gone? He probably has bounty hunters and shit he can call.”

Sounds like bullshit to her.

“Sounds like bullshit to me. Plus, even if he does, he’s looking for you, not me.”

“Fuck that, boo.
