THE VALUE INN is ten dollars cheaper than the Economy Suites. So of course Ted takes a left and pulls in there. The Economy Suites is hardly a palace, but at least the sign says HBO, air conditioning, and California King beds.
She waits in the car while he goes in to book the room.
One thing Capri hates about Ted is how cheap he is. Itâs a major turn-off in a man. Like the piece of shit Toyota Yaris he stole. Because itâs good on gas, he says. Good on gas shouldnât factor into a lovers-on-the-run scenario. She should be flashing truckers from a speeding convertible. Checking into penthouse suites and ordering room service that comes on a cart. Thatâs the life she wants. One sheâll never have with Ted.
If she wants that life, she needs to make it on her own. Sheâs not going to make the same mistake her mother made, thinking every new boyfriend was the answer to all their problems. Most of the time they only ended up making things worse.
She doesnât know how she got in so deep with him anyway. He was supposed to be a quick fix in a bad situation. A place to land while she planned her next move. Then it turned out the next move was robbing Big Smoke. Ted was in the right place at the right time. But sheâs not sure how much longer she can ride it out with him.
On cue, Ted grovels and begs for sex as soon as they set their bags down. Sheâs not in the mood, but she eventually caves. Then Ted canât even get it up. He stands next to one of the shitty full-size beds, tugging at his skinny dick.
âJesus Christ, Ted.â Capri stands on the bed. âWhatâs your problem?â
âI donât know, boo. Câmere, let me try it again. Say something dirty.â
He paws at her leg and she kicks him away.
âI donât need that thing pressing against me. Put it away.â
âIâm freaked out, okay?â Ted steps into his boxers and shimmies them up. âYouâre not worried at all?â
âAbout what?â
âAbout everything. I donât know where weâre going. How weâre going to sell this shit. Who is out there looking for us. The one time we did sell something, you beat the guy up and took it right back. You couldâve killed him and you donât even give a fuck.â
âFuck him.â
âFuck him. Right. Fuck Eddie too? At the dispensary? You donât think heâs going to want his weed back? You donât think Carvell may be coming after us. You told meââ
âCarvell doesnât realize heâs a security guy at a weed store. Not a fucking mercenary.â
âWhat about my bail bonds guy? He said if I took off heâd come looking for me.â
âWho?â
âHarry. The guy who bailed me out. How long before he realizes Iâm gone? He probably has bounty hunters and shit he can call.â
Sounds like bullshit to her.
âSounds like bullshit to me. Plus, even if he does, heâs looking for you, not me.â
âFuck that, boo.
